Abstract:
Laser based photoluminescence imaging techniques were introduced by the applicants as innovative new techniques for rapid characterization of crystalline silicon bricks, wafers and solar cells. These already widely adopted techniques allow insight to be gained into a host of electronic material and device parameters with an unprecedented combination of high spatial resolution and short measurement time. Application for in-line process monitoring during solar cell manufacturing is expected to result in higher cell efficiencies and production yield, thereby contributing to the cost reduction required to achieve grid parity. For the further development of silicon solar cell technology the relevance of luminescence imaging can thus be likened to the development of x-ray techniques for medical applications. The implementation of high power fibre coupled infrared lasers is a crucial element in these techniques. |
