Abstract:
We describe the world’s first high performance, commercial holographic data storage system. InPhase Technologies and Bayer MaterialScience have collaborated to develop and bring to market a holographic archival drive and media system that stores hundreds of gigabytes per disk with data transfer rates of hundreds of megabits per second. Exploiting the coherent properties of lasers, the InPhase-Bayer storage system, the Tapestry 300rTM, is based on breakthroughs in both optical design and architecture, and optical polymer materials. As the first product in a family of systems, the 300r stores 300 Gigabytes of data per disk with a data transfer rate of 160 Mbits/second compared to the Blu-ray disk performance of 50 Gigabytes of data at 36 Mbits/sec. The holographic system represents the next generation of optical data storage, providing capabilities in storage density and transfer rate not accessible with traditional approaches.


The award ceremony of the Berthold Leibinger Innovationspreis 2008 will be celebrated on the evening of September 15.
