Subject:
Development of Silicon Photonics: Si-Based Detector

Applicant:
Dr. Cary Gunn, Luxtera Corp., USA

Abstract:
Luxtera is the first company to successfully overcome the complex technical obstacles involved with integrating highperformance optics directly with silicon electronics on a monolithic CMOS chip; the breakthrough resulted in the recently announced world’s first commercial CMOS Photonics product. To date, enterprise customers had a choice of selecting from high-cost, high-performance optics and low-cost, low-performance copper connections. By bringing optical solutions to a monolithic CMOS chip, Luxtera is changing the market for the first time providing users with a low-cost, high-performance solution. The foundation of Luxtera’s technology are formed by Cary Gunn’s vision and early successes at Caltech realizing monolithically integrated optoelectronics. His research in Professor Axel Scherer’s nanofabrication group led to numerous breakthroughs in nanophotonic design and fabrication. He is Co-Founder and Chief Technology Officer of Luxtera and leads its world class technology development activities.
