Subject:
Ultrashort Pulse Laser Technology: Future of High-Precision Micro Machining in High-Volume Production

Applicant:
Dr. Jens König, Dr. Thorsten Bauer, Ulrich Graf, Robert Bosch GmbH and Dr. Markus Willert, Bosch Rexroth AG

Abstract:
Ultrashort laser pulse technology enables new component designs and products by very high precision micromachining without thermal stress or subsequent finishing processes. The project group of the Robert Bosch GmbH has promoted and developed this technology from a universitary level to a cost-effective manufacturing technology for mass production. Fundamental physics and supplied system technology is evolved in cooperation with partners in public founded projects. Ultrashort laser pulse technology is transferred to a first serial production process and with growing power of laser systems further more serial applications will follow. Prototypes of fuel injection components manufactured by the project group show high functional potentials and enable lower fuel consumption and C02-emissions.

The award ceremony of the Berthold Leibinger Innovationspreis 2008 will be celebrated on the evening of September 15.
The award ceremony held on July 3, 2006 was a meeting place for 250 invited guests.
