Tenth Call for Applications: 100,000 Euros for Innovative Laser Technology

Deadline March 1, 2018, for applications and nominations for the Berthold Leibinger Innovationspreis and Zukunftspreis

While celebrating its 25th anniversary, the Berthold Leibinger Stiftung calls for applications and nominations for the tenth round of its innovation prize for applied laser technology. Referring to this double jubilee, the German non-profit foundation raised the Innovationspreis prize money for the Berthold Leibinger Innovationspreis to 100.000 euros. At the award ceremony on September 21, 2018, the winner of the first prize will receive 50,000 euros; second and third prize are worth 30,000 and 20,000 euros. The biennial international Berthold Leibinger Innovationspreis is open to both individuals and project groups with innovations regarding the application or generation of laser light in any industry or field of technology, from automotive to quantum telecommunications, from laser light sources via process developments and analytics to machines and installations.

At the same time, the foundation accepts nominations for the Berthold Leibinger Zukunftspreis, awarded to a single excellent researcher for an outstanding contribution to applied laser technology. The prize is endowed with 50.000 euros an has been presented since 2006 in addition to the innovation prize. Candidates can only be nominated for instance by scientific societies and groups, as well as professional associations that focus on lasers or photonics.

Since 2000, the jury of the Berthold Leibinger Innovationspreis and Zukunftspreis has altogether presented 36 prizes involving 124 prize winners from 12 different countries on four continents. The prize money so far sums up to 620,000 euros. The jurors selected 72 finalists for the innovation prize; they all had the chance to personally present their work during the jury session.

The presentation of the awards to the prize winners traditionally takes place at a grand award ceremony at the headquarters of the TRUMPF Group in Ditzingen, Germany. The foundations founder, Professor Berthold Leibinger, had been TRUMPF’s managing partner from 1978 until 2005 when he handed over the family owned company to the next generation. As of 2018 the Leibinger laser prizes award ceremony will always take place the third Friday of September every other year.
